About the Event
Metallurgy, Materials Science and the Fire Investigation
Presenter: Roger Costanzi from Bureau Veritas
The presentation will introduce the audience to some of the metallurgical properties of
alloys and their response to high temperature, discuss more broadly materials science and
the tools and analytical equipment used when investigating equipment failures, and the
information they can provide in fire investigation cases. The forensic evidence sourced
from mechanical failure vs fire damage is very different, but there exists metallurgical
features for different alloys when exposed to high temperature that can aid the
investigation process. This evidence, coupled with analysis of nearby ancillary equipment
(fire damaged or not), can be used be to make a determination on the likely ignition
source(s). A number of case studies that Bureau Veritas have been involved with, and the
metallurgical features and evidence obtained from examination of fire damaged
equipment, will be shared with the audience.
