October Education Night - Thursday 14 October 2021, 18:00 hours.

Lithium-Ion Batteries, Electric Vehicles and Mega-batteries

In recent times, face to face education nights have not been possible due to COVID-19 restrictions. Although this has been unfortunate, it has allowed us to think outside the box and come up with innovative ways to bring education to our membership. With the modernisation of the digital meeting era, we have decided to bring you astute speakers and leaders in the fire investigation industry from all over the world – note this may affect meeting times in the future (e.g., we may have morning meetings to cater for time zone differences for US speakers). We are pleased to announce our first overseas speaker, all the way from the UK.

Presenter: Professor Paul Christensen is the Professor of Pure and Applied Electrochemistry at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England UK. He is considered a world-leading expert on Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery safety. He has conducted wide-ranging research and experiments on Li-ion batteries.

This presentation will cover Li-ion battery basics; the pros and cons of Li-ion batteries; the white vapour cloud and what happens when the vapour ignites; Electric Vehicles (EV); an overview of lithium battery energy storage system fires and explosions; and will include an in-depth analysis of a battery explosion that occurred on 19 April 2019 in the city of Surprise Arizona USA. This education night is not to be missed. Note: this presentation will not be recorded to view later.
